Recycled Cardboard Cabin
Loft Cabin
Inspired by a 2005 show at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan featuring refugee housing, Stephan von Muehlen outfitted his Brooklyn loft with a log cabin bedroom made of recycled cardboard tubes, which he bought by partnering with a non-profit. The outlet, Build it Green! NYC, sells a variety of salvaged and surplus building materials such as the door and windows used for the cabin.

Cabin Steps

Von Muehlen saves energy by using a small electric heater in the cabin instead of heating his entire loft. “In the winter, I step out of my cabin and it is like going outside,“ he says.

He constructed the cabin in five days by building a deck with storage underneath and attaching vertical plywood fasteners to hold the tubes at each corner. The cabin features a corrugated plastic ceiling and, like any good winter enclosure, the walls are insulated–in this case with a layer of felt window gasketing between each tube. “It went together like giant LEGOs, and so far it’s been very cozy and held up well.”
