Airstream at the MoMA

The Airstream has become the kitschy darling of a young group of architects who are talking up the design virtues of trailers, shipping containers and other humble conveyances. Now the Airstream has its own place in the pantheon of design. This week the Museum of Modern Art in New York parked an Airstream from 1960, known as the Bambi Travel Trailer, in its lobby.

“The Bambi is a machine for living and traveling, the sort of industrialized, rationalized vessel that had long been the dream object of modernist architects,” said Christian Larsen, an curatorial assistant who organized the installation.
Maybe so, but it’s not the kind of thing you normally expect to see in a museum. No matter. It looks delightfully incongruous against the white gallery walls.
The Airstream will be on view in the lobby through November 12, 2007, but will remain as part of the museum’s permanent collection. It’s not the only automotive design owned by the museum. Its collection also includes a Willys-Overland Jeep from 1953 and a Volkswagen Beetle from 1959.For information, go to www.moma.org.
