Driftwood for the Digital Era
Harry Allen has made his mark on product design as the eponymous God of whimsical metallic piggy banks (below). His Munsters-worthy hands (bottom) reach out of walls to serve as vases and coathooks. What next? He's taken a step back in cheekiness and a step forward in the nod to the natural: and he's launched the Blockade line of furniture, as revealed at the recent New York Gift Fair.

These pieces are clusters of laminated wooden blocks: these tables and shelves are, in the most elegant way possible, one part high school wood shop, one part California craftsman. Their cubic structure takes driftwood sculpture in the direction of the digital era, grounded in the natural. He designed the line for Umbra's U+ Collection; so the pieces are often available where Umbra products are sold, including Velocity Art and Design.
