San Francisco Sets New Green Standard

Today San Francisco’s progressive mayor Gavin Newsom signed into legislation the country’s most aggressive green building standards.
Newsom has made green a priority throughout his tenure, gaining national interest and praise for pioneering practices such as the citywide ban on plastic bags, a program that has since gained traction across the country.
The law sets a new height for the sustainable bar, requiring large commercial buildings and residential towers to employ environmental building practices like solar power, nontoxic paints, and water conserving plumbing fixtures. More info on the building code can be found here.
The official signing was held at Matarozzi/Pelsinger Builders (above), the first planned LEED Gold certified commercial building in San Francisco. The recently completed turn of the century adaptive reuse structure also happens to be the headquarters of AIA SF Home Tours. Dwell will be holding special events in conjunction with the tours, which will be held the weekend of September 12-14.
