Noticed: Domed Suspension Lamps
Perhaps looking to bring home that awe-inspiring sensation of walking under the oculus of the Pantheon, designers are increasingly drawn to the colossal dome shaped suspension lamp. Ingo Maurer, that master of contemporary lighting, was one of the first designers to push the pendant boundaries, stretching the aluminum of his XXL Dome (below) to an unthinkable 70” in diameter.

Artemide introduced a dome by designer Ernesto Gismondi in 2004. The Nur Flu (below), though far less imposing than Maurer’s XXL Dome, manages to impress at a modest 26” in diameter.

Last year, Marcel Wanders unveiled his Sky Garden suspension lamp (below) for Flos, a longtime rival of Artemide. At 36” across, the lamp is hardly a humble gesture, and even features a small portrait of the designer at its center. To think, every time one walks beneath Wanders’ plaster garden, his silhouette is the focal point. Pantheon, indeed.

Spotted today on NOTCOT was a fraternal twin of the XXL Dome. The Ociu (top) by Franco Zavarise for Zava Luce is an astounding 73” in diameter. Produced in white methacrylate, the giant suspension fixture looks like a rising sun. Judging by the image, its sheer scale will frighten most anyone into submission. Are these the new skyscrapers of design? And if so, who’s next in the race to build the largest dome?
