RIAI Award: Tuath na Mara
Tuath na Mara, which earned MacGabhann Architects the Royal Irish Architects Institute’s Best House and Public Choice Awards last month, sits on the craggy, heather-covered slope in Donegal, Ireland.

The clients wanted a house that spoke to the built experience of their families. While Tuath na Mara’s width matches a generations-old family home in Ireland, its name and shape refer to a structure by a Scottish ancestor.

To merge the house with its surroundings, the architects clad the home in dark zinc. They raised the roof over the living rooms at either end of the building, affording sweeping views of the sea. Long, horizontal windows running along its mid-section maintain privacy in the three bedrooms.
