Air Conditioner Alternatives

Much attention has been paid to the greening of washers, dryers, refrigerators, and dishwashers. But one major appliance has continued to consume as much energy as ever: the air conditioner. Here are a few alternative ways to cool off.

+ Find the right fan: Modern Fan is one resource for contemporary ceiling fans, like the Pensi design above. For small-scale spinners, check out Remodelista’s roundup of retro table and desk fans, which includes Black + Blum's Venti (top).
+ Awnings placed over outdoor areas or windows can decrease a home's cooling energy by up to 33 percent. (If this sounds old-fashioned, take note: in Europe, one in three homes has one.)

+ As anyone who's shivered through their workday knows, central air conditioning doesn't always suit your target temperature. For this reason, some feel a more individual approach makes sense. Herman Miller, a furniture company known for its eco-friendly approach to design, has designed the C2 (above, right), a tiny cooling unit powered by 1.5 amps of AC current, about 90 percent less than the average space heater.

+ Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley are among several large corporations to cool their headquarters using large blocks of ice.

+ There's always a way to Do It Yourself. This air conditioner, for example, was created from an 80-millimeter fan, 12-volt transformer, and an ice box.
