Craig Borum and Karl Daubmann, principals of PLY Architecture in Ann Arbor, Michigan, were encouraging their clients to do more than a simple addition to the back of an existing house. When the clients were forced to abandon the project and relocate out of state, Karl decided to purchase the property with his wife, Ji Hye Kim, and with Craig, develop a duplex / live-work space that would also function as the firm's new digs.

Located in the Kerrytown historic district, the Park House deftly maneuvers around local zoning regulations to create a separate residential unit that shares utilities. Taking advantage of a sloping site that borders a neighboring park, the green-clad addition thrusts northward from the side of the existing structure, cantilevering over the grade to create a dynamic space for a carport, garage, and workshop. Above this, the main body of the addition pulls westward, away from the street. These two axes create a shared courtyard in the back.

No strangers to design-build, the architects managed the project from conception to completion at breakneck speed, starting in the spring of last year and moving in by October.
