Pallet House

The House for All will be the theme of this years Architecture Triennale in Milan. Ten prestigious architects have been chosen to design and build full-scale prototypes in the exhibition focusing on humanitarian housing solutions. Among the all-star cast participating in the venture will be MVRDV, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvelle, and New York-based I-Beam Design, who will be showing their Pallet House. The wooden structure, which was originally conceived for an Architecture for Humanity competition, is made from the ubiquitous wooden shipping modules.

The versatile, recyclable, and sustainable structures are easily assembled and readily available in most countries. The version pictured here was constructed in less than a week, including the furniture, by way of generous contractor friends and enthusiastic students. The trial run—performed this week in a New York warehouse in preparation for the big event—illustrates the flexibility of the Pallet House’s design, which allows residents to tailorize the size and layout of each home according to their needs.
