Resource: Salvage Yards

Jaded by the astronomical price tags so commonplace in the world of modern design, we often overlook the priceless gems lying in wait at the various salvage yards strewn across the country.
These are forgotten pieces of mid-century modern furniture, perfectly good kitchen and bathroom fittings, abandoned fireplace mantels replete with mosaics of cracked paint, and collectible flotsam covered with abstract, oxidized patinas. Forget Ikea and its embrace of disposable culture, salvage yards offer recycled wares with character and history, at bargain prices. Here are few of our favorites.
Old House Salvage: Exeter, NH
Restoration Resources: Boston, MA
North Shore Architectural Antiques: Two Harbors MN
Old Good Things: Manhattan, NY; Los Angeles, CA; Hallandale, FL; Scranton, PA
Tony’s Architectural Salvage: Orange, CA
Earthwise: Seattle, WA
Ohmega Salvage: Berkeley, CA
Salvage One: Chicago, IL
