New: International Design Awards

Design awards are given away like gumdrops. Most are meaningless or self-serving, or both. The rigorous American design award capable of influencing the culture seems to have expired when the Chrysler Design Awards folded five years ago.

Or has it? On Saturday a new outfit called the International Design Awards will exhibit winning work at the Museum of Design Art and Architecture in Culver City, near Los Angeles. Officiated by a young writer named Jamie Waugh, the design awards is a smart take on the best recent work in architecture, interiors, product, graphics and fashion. (Full disclosure: I served on their jury.) Winners include Lorcan O’Herlihy for his home (above) in Venice, California.
