Prefab Homes to Come to MoMA
Today, MoMA announced the five architects selected to show prefabricated homes in a vacant lot outside the museum on 53rd Street (above). The display will be part of the exhibit Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling, which opens on July 20, 2008.

The houses were designed by Kieran Timberlake Architects (Philadelphia, PA), Richard Horden (Munich, Germany, and London, England), Jeremy Edmiston and Douglas Gauthier (New York, New York), Oskar Leo Kaufmann and Albert Rüf (Dornbirn, Austria), and Lawrence Sass (Cambridge, Massachusetts). The architects will record the process of the houses’ fabrication, delivery, and assemblage on a Web site to launch in March.

+ The Cellophane House by Kieran Timberlake Architects is made of recyclable materials. Its steel frame and glass windows can be assembled without sealing or welding.

+ Lawrence Sass designed his House for New Orleans to help those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Homeowners can assemble the laser-cut plywood panels with nothing more than a rubber mallet.
