Miami Report: Two Million Straws

The Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka (below) has created a sweeping, wave-like installation out of more than two million straws in the top floor of the Moore Building, the main venue of Design Miami, the three-day fair that opened yesterday.

Planted amid the frothy wash of plastic is his Pane chair (above), a plump club chair created by rolling a sheet of fiber into a tube and baking it in a kiln at 104 degrees.

Yoshioka had created a similar installation surrounding his Panna Chair for Moroso at the Milan Furniture Fair in April.

Kiss Me Goodbye (above),  a more conventional chair made by Yoshioka from polycarbonate, is displayed at the new Driade showroom practically across the street, the first Driade showroom in the U.S.
