Coffee Break: Albany's Local 123

San Francisco has its fair share of third-wave coffee so we jumped at the chance to visit one of the East Bay's newest offerings. On a pleasantly sleepy stretch of Solano Avenue, Berkeley-based Local 123 opened a cafe within Flowerland nursery. From a charming 1969 Airstream Streamline Princess trailer, proprietor Frieda Hoffman and her business partner Alex Ebel churn out lattes, macchiatos, single-drip cups of coffee, and more. And the setting—a verdant nursery—couldn't be more right. Hoffman's "perma-popup" is opposite of what we've come to expect from the many cafes that seem to be victims of their success. Instead of chaotic snaking lines of undercaffeinated denizens jonesin' for their morning fix, we were treated to a peaceful garden setting, and gladly traded the drone of indie rock for the chirp of birds. Local 123's menu features coffee from Four Barrel, vegan donuts from Pepples, and pastries from Starter Bakery. Have a look inside the cafe in our slideshow.

ICFF 2012: New from Black + Blum

Two products we really loved from the ICFF show floor came courtesy of Londoners Dan Black and Martin Blum: Thermo Pot and Eau Good. The former merges practicality and aesthetics in a smart cork-topped "food flask" (as the company calls the insulated container) and the latter takes a hard look at how we purify, transport, and consume drinking water.

Coffee Break: San Francisco's The Mill

Although we usually focus on completed projects, it is equally interesting to check in during construction to see how a space develops. Things that our memories smooth over post-construction, like frustrations and changes in plans, are still rampant. That never-ending argument over where to put the couch just isn’t funny yet. To capture this oft-forgotten phase, we checked in with San Francisco coffee company, Four Barrel, a few months before opening The Mill, their second cafe. Four Barrel founders Jeremy Tooker and Jodi Geren have already seen success at their nearby Valencia Street location, and locals are eager to see how the new spot will match up. Resident baker Josey Baker shares what will be different, what inspires him, and why he can’t wait for the Mill’s opening in July

I'm A Kombo's Social Act

Delicious high-concept food? A homey setting? Stylish crowd? Denmark, Denmark, Denmark? Yup, this video from crane.tv on the itinerant dinner series The Social Act by the Danish chefs at I'm a Kombo hits just about all the right notes. From inventive cuisine to expounding on their culinary roadshow, chefs Bo Lindegaard and Lasse Askov look to be a very cool duo indeed. I love how they play off each other in the interview portion of the video, and from there it's pretty much a heaping dose of voyeuristic envy as you see the execution of a meal you wish you were invited to. But The Social Act is meant to be a movable feast, so keep an eye out for one in your town. Bon appetit!
