Modern Coat Racks

As evidenced by my recent Holiday Gift Guide, I've got storage on the brain. Inspired by my friend Mary Halvorson—a very talented musician who happens to be in the market for a coat rack—I've put together this roundup of seven modern, compact, and affordable (and, also, um, not-so-affordable) coat racks that look as good as they work.

My top pick is Blu-Dot's Splash Coat Rack, above, made of powder-coated steel and solid walnut, available in both a muted gray and this bright blue ($279).

Perhaps more in line with the reality of our wallets is this sleek and skinny number from Ikea, which can hold a closet's worth of clothing on its streamlined frame. And: $9.99!

Joining the cheap-and-does-the-trick category: this silver steel Adesso coat rack. It retails at Target for $99, but I also found it on amazon.com for $70. It's got eight pegs—four higher, four lower—which seems like a nice way to squeeze more storage out of a single pole...

To my eye, the Sven Coat Tree has a ski-ish look about it, with its curving birch legs clad in walnut veneer. I like the elegant lines, and the price: $149.

I also love the Twist Coatrack from Design Within Reach, especially in this colorful version (it also comes in a more sedate Mocha). The double helix shape, formed by eight beech prongs connected with steel and plastic, looks elegant and can hold loads of stuff ($400).

Similar to the Twist, but simpler and more 'iconic' (it's in museum collections around the world, etc) is this Sciangai Clothing Stand, designed by the architecture firm Studio De Pas, D'Urbino and Lomazzi in 1973. It is, shockingly, $994.

And lastly, if money was no object, I'd splurge on the handsome Stretch from Misewell Modern Furniture—a Milwaukee-based company that crafts all its furniture in the Midwest (read more about them here). The Stretch is made from rich walnut, with pinwheel joinery. It's $1,180, a number that strikes me as rather high for a coat rack. But perhaps if you construe it as a family heirloom of the future...?

If a coat rack was a luxury item (and who’s to say it’s not?) we would go for this hand-crafted version from Misewell that is made from silky-smooth walnut with pinwheel joinery for $1,180. However, Misewell now offers Spruce, at the slightly more reasonable price of $410.
