Betel Restaurant

Restaurant openings have slowed down considerably here in New York in the past year, as I am sure it has everywhere. So it was a great treat to visit Betel, a just opened Thai restaurant in the West Village.

Designed by Martin Brudnizki, Betel is nothing like Martin's other NYC design, Le Caprice at the Pierre. It's Thai gone modern with lots of wood, brick, and metal, all with no fuss. Even the lighting fixtures, which are Thai-inspired, were custom made.

Probably done on a budget, the restaurant does not feel cheap. It's finished and comfortable and, unlike the glam of Brudnizki's other projects, feels just right being so pared down. The cocktails, in contrast, are anything but simple.
