Young Designers on Display in Milan

It's no secret that during the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, one of our favorite stops is SaloneSatellite, the portion of the fair devoted to young designers under the age of 35. Curated by an esteemed jury of international design stars and spearheaded by the indomitable Marva Griffin-Wilshire, SaloneSatellite is one of the most important opportunities for young designers to get noticed by the world at large. This year 11 designers have been selected to display and sell their creations for a short time during the holiday season (September 27-December 25), at Milan's premier shopping destination—the Design Supermarket at La Rinascente. Here we share a sneak peek at the offerings from each of the 11 young designers.

All of the pieces were conceived as part of the SaloneSatellite 2013's theme—Design and Craftsmanship: Together for Industry. The basic idea was to unify traditional craftsmanship with modern production opportunities. First up is Tania De Cruz, who was born in Portugal, grew up in Belgium and relocated to Italy. Her piece, Braque, is a modular cork tile.

Next are Sample Avenue, a collection of ethereal glass pieces from Polish-born Karoline Fesser, who maintains a studio outside Cologne, Germany.

Kaamos, a Finnish collective comprised of designers Erik Bertell, Katriina Nuutinen and Matti Syrjälä, presented a collection at SaloneSatellite that was inspired by Finnish log cabin culture. They are presenting a number of pieces, including the Oma Floor Lamp by Katrina Nuutinen, which features a wrought-iron base and a blown-glass shade. "Oma" is Finnish for "own".

From Kaamos designer Matti Syrjälä is the copper Säilö container set, which are offered in six different sizes and are topped by Finnish birch bark.

Another piece from Matti Syrjälä is the LED-illuminated Miina lamp, comprised of mouth-blown acidified glass and elm wood. Miina is Finnish for land mine, by the way.
