Collection by Ivan Paradisi

Woodworking

Contemporary look and practices, the renewal of the tools of the trade producing never-beforeseen designs and shapes so complex that at times they seem impossible. A healthy obsession; the expert yet fallible hand producing results that are little short of technical perfection – because it’s only the little, almost imperceptible errors that tell you something is manmade with its accuracy and uniqueness. Fluid lines which intertwine and run after each other. Dovetails that betray no signs of forcing. It is thus that wood undergoes interesting material transfigurations, until, quite amazingly, it reveals itself again by the grain. It is thus that the inlay, an ancient skill, finds new energy in the eccentricity of daring, personal interpretations.

components: ebony, maple wood, velvet

Elegant, strong, ironic, this dormeuse is an experiment for its designer, Ivan Paradisi; the name itself is a play on words. His first attempt at a piece of furniture for sitting, it is abundantly baroque and recalls the 4/4 rhythmic cadence of music. Paradisi, a former musician, is often inspired by his past in his woodworking creations.

Ostensibly designed for the kitchen, the surface of Espresso Love shows a fork, a spoon and a knife, created in the unique multiple-surface inlay technique that characterizes the whole collection. Sharp-cornered and geometrical, it features broken lines and angles of different sizes.

Inside story recalls the shapes and movements of an elegant insect or plant. It carries, suspended, a single drawer with an unexpectedly curvaceous profile. It combines elements from the past - such as the Louis XV legs – with a contemporary mood, which can be seen in the geometries on its surface and the use of empty spaces. It is the only piece in the collection which features the warm-coloured pear wood.

Sinchronicity embodies a moment in time of potential movement. The ebony profiles restrain the light maple wood which is trying to escape. Its organic shapes, almost zoomorphic, embrace its user, welcoming him or her in a concave space between its two drawers. It is here that the intricate inlay on the surface develops into a hypnotic diffusion of energy.

Among the pieces of the collection, this is the one that best conjures up the space of an office or, generally speaking, the time and place of work. Designed as an eccentric but elegant and functional desk, it is named after the city where it was made. The Italian city of Turin shines through the lines that are reminiscent of the dense weave of a metropolis while the contrast of wood colours is a tribute to Turin's imperial architecture.

If it could move, Master Blaster would proceed solemnly, with a purposeful stride. A strange animal that defies the law of gravity: its slender paws or trunks surprisingly support the gargantuan body. Made of African wood, it recalls the black continent and its gigantic animals.
