Bike Corral

Shake Shack tapped us to design a bike corral in place of a parking space in front of their Center City Philadelphia location. We noticed that while current bike corrals maximize parking areas for bikes, they do not truly reimagine the experience of locking up a bike.

Our design focused on a few key elements: providing personal space, creating intuitive locking points, beautifying the area and creating visual interest when it is not in use.

Our first gestural move was create more personal space when locking a bike, as locking a bike typically requires either locking to an item not designed to be locked to (i.e. street sign) or struggling to fit a bike into an overcrowded rack. As a result, we decided to move in the direction of provided a designated “parking space” that allowed for more personal space and minimized having to reposition adjacent bikes to make yours fit.
