Tigg Coll Architects took a new approach to a straightforward town house renovation and expansion in London. The home’s rear extension has its own personality, with with pivoting glass doors, sharp red support beams, and a wood-burning fireplace. The overhanging concrete plinth acts as a hearth or, as Tigg imagines it, a sort of contemporary inglenook. Wood piles neatly between the beam and wall. The fireplace, a Stovax Riva 2, is flanked by a Lampe Gras wall lamp; firewood is cleverly stored in the narrow space between the fireplace and the red support beam, creating a fun moment of practical texture in the room.

With the same materials that were used originally—like the mahogany and Douglas fir in the living room—Dominick and Scott sensitively restored the interior. Knoll fabrics cover the vintage Paul McCobb stools.

A custom built-in with laminate accents in the dressing area is also by Joshua West Smith. “He did such a beautiful job of making cabinetry that looks like what could have been in the house,” says Merrill.

Woodshop 506 did the millwork for the cabinets and shelves throughout the home.

Although you might not be able to easily reach the tops of cabinets, shelves, mirrors, or taller moldings, take assistance from feather dusters or vacuums with long brush attachments.

The corner library takes color inspiration from the facade.

In the primary bedroom, daughters Ellis and Panda play on pieces of a 1972 Camaleonda sofa by Mario Bellini. A Davide Groppi Moon pendant, made of Japanese paper, hangs overhead.

Hardware store plaster was applied to the walls and polished with beeswax to bring in a rich texture.

The Roborock Q7 Max+ is the most powerful model in the new Q-Series, and a long-lasting all-rubber brush helps to release more dirt, dust, and potential allergy triggers from carpets into the vacuum.

“We wanted to honor the existing building by revealing all of the exposed structural elements, and many of the original finishes,” Swatt says.

The primary bedroom kept the original, two-sided copper fireplace.

"Floor-to-ceiling glazing provides strong indoor/outdoor connections while carefully placed clerestory windows serve to infuse the home with dappled light from above, affording views of sky and treetops," says the firm.

The living room features a Malibu sofa from Kasala, and it sits above a Moroccan wool carpet the owner inherited.

Mickus installed new storage under the window seat to go with the existing woodwork.

The wet bar features a backsplash covered with copper-colored glass tile. The lower cabinets are shou sugi ban–treated red oak, and the open shelves are made of white oak.

The Impolas furnished the living room with an upholstered sofa from Article and wide-plank engineered oak flooring.
