This Fold House
It took a mere six months—three in the factory and three on-site—for this prefab to come to fruition on the shore of Sweden’s Müsko Island.

Prefab ubiquity remains a pipe dream in the United States, but the process is a specialty in Scandinavia. Multi-disciplinary Swedish firm Claesson Koivisto Rune created the plans for this home for design-minded kit-house manufacturer Arkitektus. Considering the unique balance of the facade, as well as its climate-specific construction—the asymmetrical “lifted” roof allows for both water drainage and maximum light during the dark winter months—Claesson Koivisto Rune’s approach to the project is somewhat surprising. “We design buildings from the inside out,” explains principal Eero Koivisto. “The exterior is more or less a product of the interior plans.”

How can you say this is still a pipe dream in the USA. Have you never visited http://www.bluhomes.com
"Pipe dream in USA/NA ...? I guess the value of that comment lies in the use/interpretation of the term 'Ubiquity'. Pre-fabs are the cutting edge of new domicile architecture in NA, especially in the ADU and second home areas. Like Hybrids and EV's, a low percentage of the market, but growing. Actually, first adopters, seem(anecdotal) to be with the same market demographic as purchasers of Hybrids and EV's.
These are beautiful houses, but simply not cost-effective. Why should I pay ~$200/sq.ft. when standard onsite frame construction (in my area, anyway) costs half that much? If I'm simply interested in architectural styling, I can buy modern-style plans, or hire an architect, build onsite, and still come in well under $200/sq.ft. It seems to me that prefab companies could take some manufacturing lessons from the buiders of double-wide mobile homes.
