At Home in the Modern World

The Gladstone Hotel

When on travel, I rarely spend time at my hotel—I much prefer to squeeze every second out of my trip exploring all that the city in which I'm in has to offer. On a recent trip to Toronto, however, my lodging was just as much an attraction as was what was outside its four walls. My home for four days: the historic Gladstone Hotel.

Built in 1889 and checking in guests ever since, the Gladstone Hotel is one of Toronto's oldest continuously operating hotels. In the early 2000s, new owners embarked on a major restoration and renovation, completed in 2005. The hotel's 37 rooms were each designed by a different local Toronto artist or group. I stayed in the Combo Moderna room designed by Kelly Palmer and Melanie Zanker.
