Sliding House
If ever there were evidence that architectural innovation knows no limits, the Sliding House by London-based de Rijke, Marsh and Morgan (dRMM) is it.
The house, built for a private client, is a 3-in-1 building that slides along railroad tracks recessed into the concrete foundation. A greenhouse-like glass interior structure is exposed through the sliding movement of the red rubber and larch sheaths that form the exterior walls. This creative intervention fulfills the clients' request for a home where they could grow food and enjoy the landscape.
The dramatic functionality of the house is further underscored by the simple farmhouse silhouette. Set in a rural location, it could be just like most other European countryside architecture, but when the concealed interior emerges, it's clear it's a feat of engineering and a shining example of modern architectural creativity.

This house is so COOOOL!
This design is amazing. 'Green thumb' lovers everywhere can appreciate this home. Id love to see more and more people around the world try to grow there own herbs and foods. Organic is better all the way around. I love how design can change the way we live. I want to see the interiors of this home! WOW.
This is very interesting. Is DWELL doing an issue on convertible housing?? This is one of a number of houses/buildings that look to combine functions for a more self-sufficient living style.
Amazing. But all I can think of is what happens when it breaks down?! "Hey honey, can you give the sliding HOUSE repairman a call?"
Why? "This creative intervention fulfills the clients' request for a home where they could grow food and enjoy the landscape." That request could have been met with something other than a swiss-army house. Can you imagine what a pain in the ass it is to completely empty a large green house so it can be retracted? If you have a green house why would you want to empty it and put it away for an extended period?
The greenhouse doesn't retract. The outer shell slides over the top of it. I think it's great!
i think its awesome. its about time architecture stopped being a fixed rigid object... it gives a whole new dimension to sheltering the living through evolving with the living. I love it!
Paul is correct of course and I am an idiot (my words not Paul's). I love glass houses but for some reason this one doesn't do it for me. My southern locale probably makes me wary of living in a greenhouse even if it does have a cover. The night photos are unbelievable.
Wow! I haven't seen this house published anywhere else. This is really fascinating. I've seen a number of projects recently that attempt to reuse train cargo containers for various dwellings/clinics/etc... but this concept sort of turns that idea on its head. Instead of the location being convertible the structure itself is on rails. Brilliant! I wish I had thought of it. I think I'm going to link this project to my blog too.
