Parksite Residence, Rotterdam
A former ambulance garage may seem like an unusual option for a home, but in the hands of innovative Rotterdam design office Doepel Strijkers it proved to be an inspired choice. The strongest point of the 2,800-square-foot space, remodeled into a family home for clients Maarten Laupman and Simone Rots, is its location bordering a quiet park. The rear wall was therefore replaced by an enormous glass window, opening the space to the greenery outdoors. The garage’s single level was restricting, but Doepel Strijkers solved this by adding a dugout in the middle of the building, creating the height needed for a second level and for the bedrooms, which are housed in a polycarbonate "lightbox." The custom-built storage elements, kitchen, and stairs—all finished in bright orange polyurethane—link the dugout to the entrance (on the street side) and living room (on the park side). A fabulous house for "parties" I'm sure...except for "bathroom access". But for "everyday living"? Such an odd layout...esp. the bedroom/ bath area! Also a lot of wasted space. Finally...the overall space just looks "rather cold and uncomfortable". Oh, I like "orange" but... "that's a lot of orange"!
After further reconsideration I would like to retract much of what I wrote yesterday. Especially the criticism regarding the bedroom/bath layout. The more I think about the entire home the more I like it actually...with perhaps some cosmetic changes. But that's strictly personal of course. Now, "if it were mine"...I would "bump out" directly from the middle bedroom with a open platform to where the steps begin...with steps leading to it from your main living area. A small office perhaps or library? You'd still have abundant stairs on both sides leading to the lower level. You could either leave the area underneath open or enclosed for whatever purpose you choose. Even just "leave the stairs" with nice lighting for "display purposes"! Just "throwing something out there"! Whew!!! ;^)
