Oakland Museum Preview
Last week I got a sneak preview of the Oakland Museum of California, a Kevin Roche-designed museum in Oakland that's set to reopen on Saturday, May 1st. Mark Cavagnero Associates has completed a light renovation of this wonderful bit of high Brutalism, adding more gallery space, a stronger sense of circulation and some canopies to shelter visitors from the elements as they move from space to space. Though the building itself is pretty remarkable, even more amazing is the rooftop garden designed by Dan Kiley. Covering 7.7 acres, this is maybe the nicest roof garden I've ever seen, a poem in modern landscape design. What's more, it's a city park accessible to all during museum hours. I'm embarassed to admit it was my first time over to the museum, but it was a wonderful trip and I'm excited to visit again. Have a look at this slideshow to see what I saw.

I agree... Dioramas rule! The more digital we get the more analog information like this lightbox grows on me. Of course remember that digital sampling taken to an infinite degree has the fidelity of (you guess it!): analog. BTW you might also want to look into the Museum of Jurassic Technology for some interesting twists on the nature of museums: http://www.mjt.org/
Victor, So funny you mention the Museum of Jurassic Technology. That's just what my tour guide and I were discussing as we wandered into the Natural Sciences exhibit. It's like this amazing time capsule of what felt cutting edge when I was a kid, but now has this wonderfully dated quality. Too bad they won't let people in just to see where museums were in the late 60s. I hope they still used lots of the dioramas. I fear that too often "innovation" and "digitized" get conflated. One of the few ways to actually see how big a golden eagle is as an adult and as a chick, is to see these versions of them right up close.
Thanks for sharing the Oakland Museum Preview. Wish If I could visit the place , it looks awesome.
