Modern Chicken Coop
With all the talk of chickens being kept as pets in urban areas, it's nice to know there's a modern chicken coop alternative.
The New York Times has been reporting on urban chicken keeping in Brooklyn and beyond. Now Maxime Evrard's Cocorico offers a modern coop and feeder to keep the hens housed and fed in style. The design is meant to encourage domestic farming and adds a little elegance to the rooftop or backyard farm with its egg shaped house and feeder.

Harley Cowan designed a four-door urban chicken coop called the "Chicken Sedan", which won the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) People's Choice Award in Portland, Oregon. Karrie Jacobs, founding editor-in-chief of Dwell, said the Chicken Sedan was “Possibly my favorite thing in the competition" at the Portland Spaces magazine "Root Awards". How do I purchase this chicken coop?
Next to the eglu chicken houses the next wonderful chicken coop has arrived. I am thinking of buying this one and let me increase the production of chickens.
I have a great coop for my chickens - easy to clean, modern. See it on http://www.littlebarncoop.com - I have it in red. Chickens love it - I have seven hens currently, brahmas, orpingtons, cochins and 1 silkie! Had two wooden coops to begin with, one didn't last long at all. Second would swell, doors get stuck, then shrink, then the odd leak appears. Plus the mites hide in the wood. This one I've had no problems. Great.
The coop looks good. But what about the cost and the weather protection factors. Any ideas ?
I bought the best, cutest little chicken coop imagineable, actually, it's a called a Chicken Crib. My girls are happy, and I love seeing it in the back yard. It looks great, has weathered the elements perfectly, and the hens are laying steadily. I can move it around easily, too. This really is way out there... I'm amazed that Chicken Keeping has come this far, it really is quite cool. In fact having read some of your comments here I wouldn't mind betting you could make a small fortune from the plans to this one. Form must follow function. These coop designs may look beautiful, but they are quite unsuitable for the actual business of chicken keeping. Where do I begin? Inadequate weather and predator protection, cramped, difficult to clean..... Anyone who hopes to design a functional chicken coop ought at least to have met a live chicken once in their lives.
Charlottesville Viginia is also pushing for urban agriculture. Four families who live downtown got together to form the Coop Co-op and hired Little Architecture to design a modern chicken coop for 11 chickens. The design had to go through the Board of Architectural Review because it was in an historic neighborhood. It passed with full approval! http://www.littlearchitecture.com/coopp_2.html
