Jan & Aya
On a strip called Franklin in Brooklyn's Greenpoint, warehouses loom; and if you miraculously fail to see the corrugated steel between the trees, you hear and see the trucks passing along the brick store and house fronts. It's here that one of the newest design districts of New York is burgeoning; and where design boutique Jan & Aya has set up shop, bringing tranquility and rather fair-priced home and fashion accessories to the once industrial neighborhood.

The brick walls and white-washed floors are clean slates on which Carolyn Veith Krienke draws out collections by local designers and artists. She is a community-minded shopkeeper, offering twice monthly open calls to independent designers to bring in their work for consideration. (The current theme of interest: an "alpine" fall theme.) Also of focus are children's furniture and clothing: the store is named for the two children of Carolyn and her husband.
