Hollywood Renovation: Week 8
In this exclusive series for Dwell.com, Linda Taalman of Taalman Koch Architecture tracks the hands-on renovation of her and her partner's live-work space in Hollywood, California. Week 8: Furnishing the living area.
As noted by previous tenants, living in Ellwood’s Courtyard apartments is a constant source of pleasure. Even when we are busy working we are enjoying the space. One of our main strategies in furnishing the living area is the use of natural materials to soften the space and keep things as elemental as the building. The ground floor in the back functions as an informal living room, which doubles as overflow workspace. It needed to be a comfortable place to sit and for people to gather around the fireplace; it had to work for both live and work; and it also had to be durable and able to stand up to kids. This week we are primarily focusing on furnishing the living space, with a little help from two of our favorite furniture and lifestyle shops in Los Angeles: Tortoise and Specific. Both shops provide an aesthetically tuned eye and present unique one-of-a-kind objects, art and furniture pieces that are handcrafted, beautiful and affordable. The other major feature in our living space is the artwork, with our good friend Uta Barth’s photos as the centerpiece.

Is this an advertorial? I'm not sure I quite enjoyed all the product and name placements indelicately strewn around everywhere. This doesn't feel like Dwell and I think is off brand. Nice space, though.
Stephen, Thanks for your feedback, which we appreciate. In this series we're chronicling the renovation of an apartment from beginning to end, which includes finding appropriate furnishings. Dwell is a design resource intended to help people with their renovation projects and we frequently get asked about products featured and where they can be found. This article serves as such a resource and we hope that by sharing one couple's renovation, others who are searching for new ideas can glean something from their experiences. All of the pieces in the story were selected by the owners of the home and is most definitely not an advertorial.
Stephen, I am giving the names of our resources in this project as a way of letting the process be completely transparent. Often these are more kept hidden. Instead we hope to give others the opportunity to find the materials easily. As it's a rental space our strategies for changing the space are made by what we bring to it, instead of altering it.
Love the space too - and no objections to identifying where objects were found - I only wish they were based in New Zealand!.
I admire the intelligence of TK's architectural work but seeing this article is like finding out that Charlie Chaplin was a communist. The work still rocks, though.
