Heading to Lima, Peru
I'll be traveling to Lima, Peru tomorrow to cover the National Gift Show and, of course, to take in the many sights of the city. There are a few places I'm very excited to visit including the Museo de Arte, El Mercado restaurant (which Miyoko Ohtake wrote about here), as well as the places covered in our 2008 Detour article. I'm sure much has changed since then and I'm hoping that you, our readers, will have some suggestions of cool, off the beaten path, or design-y places of note. We've gotten some of our best travel tips this way and hoping this time will be the same! Leave your suggestions in the comments section below and look for a slideshow in the coming days.

I studied urban planning in college and am very excited to just walk around the city and take in the streetscapes, parks, and storefronts.

The Plaza San Martin.

Ceviche, one Peru's culinary mainstays.

The narrow streets of downtown Lima show the modern alongside the colonial.

Love Lima - such an exciting city full of contrasts. My favorite spot is La Mar http://lamarcebicheria.com/web/intro.php my favorite is ceviche Lujoso - yum with a good Pisco Sour...enjoy!
Welcome to my strange and chaotic but fascinating city. I recommend Museo Larco Herrera. Also a stroll in the malecon of La Punta, Callao where you can have lunch in La Rana Verde (seafood).
I always like to take visitors for a tour in Cerro San Cristobal, so that they can get a view of Lima in its full ... let's say diversity to put it nicely. The bus leaves from Plaza de Armas at regular intervals (they take off when there's enough passengers, look out for a lady shouting "cerro") and takes you through the historical centre to a hill with a spectacular view (if you're lucky enough and there's little fog) over Lima. You get a proper understanding of the size of less nice areas in Lima too. To counter balance the trip to Cerro San Cristobal, I recommend a stroll by Boulevard Saenz Peña in the district of Barranco, where you will find many art galleries.
Hi Diana, If you have the time - how could you not visit Caral? The Oldest City in the New World and approx 2 hours north of Lima. http://www.richard-coates.com/2008peru#!__2008vid02/vstc1=page-5 chao, and have fun, Richard
Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions!
Hi Diana! As a proud Peruvian Architect I must to suggest you to visit the Bolivar Hotel (downtown) to drink an amazing Pisco Sour, visit Pachacamac, eat in a famous restaurant Punto Azul and enjoy all your travel. I´m sure you are going to have a wonderful trip. Keep save! ;D Sincerely, Milagros
One of my favourite places is the Monasterio de San Francisco with it's bone-strewn catacombs and a library straight out of Harry Potter (the biggest books I have ever seen!). Highly recommended!
