Emeryville Renovation: Part 1
In our latest Backstory series, we'll be previewing the loft renovation that will be the featured My House in Dwell's November issue—our first-ever online sneak peek. Here, Emeryville, California architect Peter Benoit will share the process behind customizing the San Francisco Bay area loft he shares with his wife, Lynda. Part 1: As it Was.
We had been looking for places for about a year when we finally found this loft. It had a lot that needed to be done—and undone—but the view and high ceilings really hooked us, and we knew that we could work with it. Here's how we lived in it for about five months, before we started the renovation.
Stay tuned for the next installment, where Peter—an architect—delves into the drawings, sketches, and plans he made for the master renovation, and watch as tarps go up while drywall and framing come down.

Can't wait to see how it turns out! Very interesting.
Thanks for reading, Nancy! Stay tuned for the next installment in a few weeks, with tons of demolition photos and architectural plans. Plus, keep an eye out for our November issue when the final design will be revealed (and, having seen it, I can say it's truly fantastic!).
This loft has such potential! Personally, I see how traditional design can be complemented with modern elements, perhaps large oversized art on the wide expanse of walls. The natural light is wonderful in this space. The vintage metal tanker desk looks right at home in the space. I hope that it stays!
This loft is kind of the antithesis of loft. All the spaces are closed off and partitioned from each other. When I think and fantasize of lofts, my first image is of very open spaces that either flow into each other or are not noticeably partitioned. Can't wait to see the results.
Terrible layout. I am sure it will turn out incredible! Makes me feel better that our house is a mess - also waiting to remodel.
