A handsomely renovated midcentury home is now for sale near Atlanta, Georgia. The current owners, who purchased the property in 2007, tapped local architects Jennifer Pindyck and Lloyd (Bud) Shenefelt to update and expand the home in 2016. The duo introduced a new addition, a central courtyard, and a sunlit entryway while restoring the home’s classic features.

At the time of the renovation, both Pindyck and Shenefelt were principals at the Atlanta-based firm DSNWRK. “We loved the house from the onset,” says Shenefelt, now an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “But the clients needed more room and functional space throughout the house.”

The new central courtyard helped create a better indoor/outdoor connection for the new portion of the home, as Pindyck explains. “The relationship between the interior and exterior of the house became a driving force throughout the whole process. We were interested in creating a multitude of different outdoor spaces, so that each of the indoor rooms had a different relationship to the outdoors.”

The new courtyard adds to a grassy lawn and deck off the kitchen, as well as a separate, Zen-like garden accessible from the dining area.

Inside the home, a large, sunlit space now connects the original living room with a spacious new kitchen. “The intent was to incorporate the kitchen space into the overall living area, and provide a comfortable place to gather and socialize,” says Pindyck.

“The other big goal of the renovation was to give the clients more personal space—whether it was a new bathroom, a workspace, or a much needed closet—while celebrating the original design of the house,” adds Shenefelt. “All of the original flagstone was stripped down to its original color, and the wood ceilings in the kitchen, dining room, and living area were stripped, and the beams painted.”
