The time is nigh to start finding gifts for the gents in your life; heaven knows they can be murder to shop for. With that in mind, I've collected a few bits and bobs that will add a bit of understated style to any man's kit, be it a pair of gloves, a scarf, or something new to read. These objects range from decidedly trad to rather more contemporary; the modern man finds a balance between the two in his personal effects. Happy holidays!

Harris Tweed by Lara Platman

This handsome coffee table book documents the great export of the Outer Hebrides islands off the coast of Scotland: Harris tweed. A portrait not so much of the fabric, but of its production, Lara Platman's book is a photographic celebration of traditional Scottish craft. It'll make you want to add another Harris blazer or to to the wardrobe.

Leather Driving Gloves by Mullholland Brothers

These dapper drivers are made in Italy of lambskin and offer just enough protection against the cold for west coasters. East Coasters will want something a bit more substantial for a true pair of winter gloves, but for a classic form artfully rendered, this is the best bet out there. Buy them small as they're bound to stretch.

Stockholm Brief by Lexdray

Though little beats the worn patina of a well-loved leather briefcase, there is an argument to be made for something sleek and techy. The ballistic nylon and many pockets of Lexdray's Stockholm Brief offer the flexibility and durability the daily commute commands, especially if that commute means making use of the overhead compartment. Solid stuff.

t guide collarbones

Collar Bones by Taylor Stitch

Ditch the plastic collar stays for good and upgrade to some classy brass. These collar bones from the San Francisco shirtmakers Taylor Stitch offer a bit more support and are a good sight more sophisticated. Not that a gent needs that much for the jewel box, but some additions are worth the extra hardware.

Port Magazine

We came across this new British men's mag when we were in London earlier this year. We picked up a copy for the plane and found that collection of essays, design coverage, and fashion features to be as good as anything out there. It ain't cheap as magazines go, but you'll hang on to it.

t guide pact1

Light Boxer Brief by PACT

PACT, purveyors of sustainably produced socks, underwear, and t-shirts, are throwing their philanthropic efforts behind tsunami relief in Japan. Purchase of these boxer briefs from the PACT for Japan collection go to support the construction of a work-house for fishermen in the town of Shizugawa by Architecture for Humanity.

4,500 Stitches Wrap by plainMADE

The Portland, Oregon, studio of plainMADE trades in hand-made goods that feel especially cozy. For a mere $65 this merino wool scarf can be yours. The red tips give it (and by extension, you) loads of character, especially when tossed over a muted blazer or winter coat.

t guide wallet

Wallet by Joshu+Vela

This made-in-San Francisco leather wallet from Joshu+Vela is simplicity itself. A simple brass closure and rich, reddish leather hold all you really need to carry with you. Seriously, leave the iPad at home, man.
