A Riverfront Retreat in Brazil Boasts a Communal Pavilion

Overlooking the Paranapanema River, Casa do Lago is a weekend home comprising two elevated, staggered volumes that separate public and private space.

Solo Arquitetos assigned one volume as private and one as social, then "mis-aligned" them "to create movement and independence." The goal was for the resulting home to follow the topography of the site and act as an elevated platform from which to take in the view of the woods and wetlands near the Paranapanema River in Alvorada do Sul.

The view of the home from the driveway shows their staggered positions nestled into a slight slope. The materiality of the two volumes were an important element. The "private" structure on the right hosts the bedrooms and was constructed in stones pulled from the site, "adding a beautiful layer of the red colors from the region to the project." The "social" structure on the left houses the communal living areas.

The interior of the social side of the home was made to feel like a communal pavilion, with all of the activities grouped in one fluid space and clerestory windows invoking an open-air aspect.

A large deck positioned under the roofline of the communal building allows occupants to feel as though they’re floating over the land and also creates a perch to appreciate views to the river.
