This New Camper Triples in Size With the Push of a Button

With BeauEr’s new expandable 3X travel trailer, you can have the best of both worlds—a home that goes everywhere you go, and a living dynamic that echos a traditional home.

Designed and manufactured in France, the expandable camper triples in size in just 60 seconds. The accordion-like trailer starts at 43 square feet—as compact as a car. And then sliding on telescopic modules, the nesting layers expand to a 129-square-foot living space.

The base model retails for $33,250. For an upgraded model with all the comforts of home—think living room sofa bed, blackout curtains, heaters, air conditioning, shower, solar panels, dry toilet, battery-monitoring smartphone app, etc.—you’re looking at around $50,000.

A prototype of the 3X built in 2011 is now on display in Germany’s Hymer Museum, which is dedicated to the history of motorhomes, caravans, and camper vans. No longer just a concept, the camper has come to full realization and is available worldwide. The trailers are available in Europe, China, Korea, Canada — and soon in Australia and the U.S.

The French camper is inspired by the small, curvy retro caravans of the 1960s, like the Bourreau Sologne, Georges et Jacques, Baillou, and Escargot. The rounded shape also draws design inspiration from sixties automobiles like the Mini Cooper and the Fiat 500.

BeauEr’s designers took the nostalgic concept of the ’60s travel trailer and modernized it with living spaces akin to those in a traditional  home—a separate bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bath. The French trailer is unlike classic campers, where the design is static and the spaces overlap.

Easily towable by most automobiles, the campers are made from lightweight materials like polyester, aluminum, and polystyrene. With durability and aesthetics in mind, the interior finishes are made from high-pressure laminates.

And if you need more space, BeauEr’s larger 3XPLUS caravan—retailing anywhere from $66,615 for the base model to nearly $80,000 for the souped-up version—has two or three bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room. The model expands from 118 square feet to 300 square feet.

The company also offers a 2X model that doubles in size, with nearly 90 square feet of living space, starting at $25,466.

And, stay tuned—the French company is working on a new concept for 2020. The Van-X, about the size of a Peugeot Traveler or Citroën SpaceTourer, is equipped with a slide-out module that expands into a sleeping quarters, which will be propped on the tailgate.
